The Attainable Slate Look

Highland Slate

by CertainTeed

Highland Slate is CertainTeed's entry into slate-look designer roofing: a broad, single-layer fiberglass shingle with a rugged cut and deep texture that reads like natural slate from the curb, without the weight or cost of the luxury tier. MATCHWORK™ installs Highland Slate across Central Ohio. CertainTeed's published specifications are below.

Wide, Irregular Slate-Cut Tabs

Highland Slate's tabs are cut wide and irregular, with enough surface texture to throw the uneven shadow lines you see on a real slate roof. From the street it reads as stone, not asphalt, which is the whole appeal of the designer tier. The color palette runs to slate-appropriate tones like Black Granite, New England Slate, Smokey Quartz, Fieldstone, and Max Def Weathered Wood.

Unlike real slate, it installs like a standard asphalt shingle (no structural reinforcement, no specialty slate crew), and unlike the multi-layer luxury lines, it gets to the slate look at a friendlier material cost.

A Step Up From Architectural

Highland Slate fits Central Ohio homeowners who want their roof to be a design feature rather than background. Think the brick Colonials of Upper Arlington, the stone-accented builds in Dublin, or a New Albany custom home where a flat shingle would underdress the elevation. It suits steep, visible rooflines especially well, since that's where the texture shows.

It carries a Class 3 impact rating, the same as the Landmark architectural line. If your neighborhood sees regular hail and you want the slate look with the highest impact classification, compare it with Belmont or Carriage House, both Class 4, below.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Class 3 and Class 4 impact ratings?

Both come from UL 2218, the industry impact test that drops steel balls onto the shingle from set heights. Class 4 is the highest classification (a larger impact, survived without cracking), and Class 3 is one step below it. Highland Slate is Class 3; if you want the slate look in Class 4, look at Belmont or Carriage House.

How is Highland Slate different from Belmont?

Both mimic natural slate. Highland Slate is a broad single-layer shingle, the more attainable way into the slate look, with a Class 3 impact rating. Belmont is the step up: a Class 4 impact rating and deeper dimensionality, aimed at steep-slope luxury roofs. We price both on your estimate so you can weigh the difference against your budget.
